Episode 42: This Article

Without a clear direction for your life, you will be swept up by people with a plan and end up in places you didn’t intend to go.

With a plan, you will make better decisions and have better life outcomes.

This depth of planning is a common thread amongst all guests in the previous 41 episodes of the show.

Today’s episode has no guest, rather it is a chat with me about the importance of creating a life and career plan for yourself.

πŸ‘‡ Creating the Plan
#

Option 1 - Personal Mission Statement
#

The first way to think about your plan is with a personal mission statement.

Think about this, you’ve just died and you are attending your funeral.

Certain people get up to speak about you

  • a family member
  • a friend
  • a work colleague
  • someone from your community

What do they say about you?

What do you wish they would say about you?

Use this inspiration to create a mission statement for yourself.

A constitution of you.

Be creative, it doesn’t have to be written. It can be a song, a poem, or a vision board. Anything you can imagine.

The length is not important.

Option 2 - The Life Vision
#

The second method is to create a vision for your life. You can start by thinking about what you want your life to look like.

These questions may provide you with inspiration.

Do

  • How much control do I have over my schedule?
  • What does my daily routine look like?
  • What’s my work-life balance?
  • What’s the importance of what I do?
  • What hobbies do I have?

Be

  • What kind of friend am I?
  • What do people know me for?
  • How do other people think of me?
  • How do I feel at work?
  • How do I feel at home?
  • How do I feel around my family?

Have

  • Where do I live?
  • What kind of house do I live in?
  • How much money do I make?
  • What kind of influence do I have?
  • What’s my family like?
  • What is my partner like?

Give

  • What do I help people with?
  • What causes do I contribute to?

This can be changed, updated, or revised in the future.

It’s important to have these things though
